The Role Of The Recovery Coach

Peer recovery support focuses on long-term recovery and is rooted in a culture of hope, health, and wellness. The focus of long-term peer recovery support goes beyond the reduction or elimination of symptoms to encompass self-actualization, community and civic engagement, and overall wellness.

The unique relationship between the peer recovery coach and the individual in or seeking recovery is grounded in trust, and focused on providing the individual with tools, resources, and support to achieve long-term recovery (SAMHSA)

How will a Peer Recovery Coach help me?

  • Peer recovery coaches have lived experience with substance use and/or mental health issues and are empathetic to the challenges you have faced. Peer recovery coaches do not pass judgement. They listen actively and offer compassion and caring. Our coaches seek to build trust and a relationship that is based on mutuality and a shared desire to heal.

  • Navigating and acquiring basic living supports can be taxing and burdensome. Your peer recovery coach has established contacts and partnerships in the community and is aware of the availability of a variety of resources including: housing, transportation, food, vocation options, linkages to systems of care and the recovery community. You can choose to tap into the resources that meet your needs as you actualize your recovery plan.

  • Our peer recovery coaches are experienced advocates that support individuals in the recovery community. Their role is to look out for your rights and autonomy and to act as your representative when requested to do so.

  • Your peer recovery coach is there to support you to work through problems and ensure that you are informed of all of your options. Our coaches will help you to brainstorm and to come up with creative solutions that you may not have been aware of. Ultimately, the recoveree choses his or her own course of action.

  • A peer recovery coach is there to offer honest feedback and information about what he or she observes. Peers offer suggestions and identify patterns of behavior that may be counterproductive to maintaining log term recovery.

  • Your peer recovery specialist has lived through the various stages of recovery and has an understanding of the obstacles that one faces. Your peer is there to listen, to offer wellness tools and to provide encouragement. We celebrate your successes along the way and share with you the benefits we have reaped by choosing to live a healthy life.

  • Your peer recovery specialist will encourage you to recognize your strengths and to leverage them to build a lifestyle that suits your wants and needs. Our peers will support you to build a realistic, action plan that will support you to achieve and maintain long term wellness and recovery. Our coaches are a testament to living a life with no limits and are there to mentor you to continue on your personal journey of healthy habit change.

The first six months of sobriety can be the most difficult.

With so many emotional, mental and physical changes underway, connection and support are key to maintaining your recovery particularly within the first 6-months. The Recovery Life Collective offers peer mentorship packages that will provide you with the resources, coping-skills, wellness planning tools, community support and accountability that you’ll need to stay focused and engaged during this critical timeframe.

When you offer an array of recovery pathways the choice to begin the journey is much more palatable.

Recovery Life Collective supports harm reduction and multiple pathways to recovery.

Behavioral change is readily achievable when you take small steps with a trusted mentor by your side.
